ANS Query #343 In response to Linda Young’s query to discover whether her great-grandfather Henry YOUNG was the son of Thomas Young who appears in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. Lindy told me that she had obtained a birth certificate for her grandfather Thomas Andrew Young born 1896 but it indicated that his father was born in Upton, Mass. and his mother in Nova Scotia. Through my membership in the New England Genealogical Society however, I found Thomas Young b. 1896 in Westborough, Mass. While Linda did not think we were related there were too many pieces of information that led me to believe we were. When the NEHGS put photocopies of the original vital records on-line I noticed what had most likely happened with the birth certificate that was sent to her; the two pages did not line up evenly across and the information was taken from the couple on the line below. Looking at the record Thomas’s father Henry O. Young was born in Fair Haven, Vermont and his mother Nettie Williams was born in Toledo, Ohio. This confirmed the Henry O. Young was the son of Thomas Young and Sarah A. who appeared in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. Linda and I are 4th cousins. Her 2nd great-grandfather Thomas Young and my 2nd great-grandfather Frederick Young were siblings. It should be noted that whenever possible, look at original records or photocopies of original records. Here was a case where the information recorded on the certificate of birth that was obtained by Linda was incorrect. = Extracts of a letter from Gwendolen Young Devoe #82 Query #399 Correction BRUSO/BROUSEAU/LOWELL
